Online Assessment

Go to page 26 of the 'Reading Level Assessment' .pdf file.

You will need a piece of paper to tally errors for this question. You do not need to note which words are read incorrectly but just to count the number of errors.

Tell your child, “This is a passage about red pandas. Please read it out loud.” As your child reads, count the number of words read incorrectly. If your child misreads a word, then self-corrects, it should not be counted as a mistake. Then answer the questions on the next page.

Not So Black and White

When you hear the word ‘panda,’ you probably imagine a big black and white bear. Red pandas, however, look nothing like the giant pandas you might be thinking about. Red pandas are widely considered to be one of the most adorable animals on earth. With a face like a kitten, and fluffy, cinnamon-colored fur, they look cute enough to cuddle. They are much smaller than panda bears. They have pointy ears and a long, bushy, ringed tail like a racoon. They usually weigh between 8 and 17 pounds, and are about as big as a house cat. They look like racoons and are the size of cats, but red pandas are a type of bear! No one knows exactly why they are called ‘pandas,’ but it may be because of the food that they eat. Red pandas eat lots of bamboo-- just like panda bears! They eat about 2-4 pounds of bamboo a day. That’s about 20,000 leaves of bamboo every single day! Imagine if you ate the same thing for almost every meal. That’s what red pandas do!
