Can I pick a time that works best for my child?
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: The ideal learning environment includes consistency of time, coach, classmates, etc. We do our best to facilitate that consistency and minimize churn. However, we recognize schedules change, both for readers and coaches, and are more than willing to help you find a new class time as needed. We generally do not expect to do this on a weekly or even monthly basis (for your sake and the sake of other class members).
Is this a 12-month program? Does it follow a school calendar? Have holidays off?
Savvy Reading is a year-round subscription-based program with the most common US holidays off and two holiday weeks off. The monthly pricing was set with these holidays in mind, so instead of lowering the monthly price for holidays, including in November and December, all months are slightly lower in price than they otherwise would be. Savvy follows a school calendar in the sense that the program recognizes the holidays listed below. However, we meet your reader at the appropriate level at any time of the year rather than being confined to a specific grade level in a given year.
Here are the holidays Savvy Reading takes off: Labor Day, Thanksgiving week, Christmas week, New Year’s Day, MLK Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day
What if my child misses a session or we go on vacation?
Savvy Reading provides both consistency and flexibility with two types of absences:
- For short absences (1-4 class sessions), we've built the program with repetition and scaffolding to allow for a few days to be missed now and again without a problem.
- For longer breaks or vacations, we have an option to pause if your reader is going to miss a full week or more of class. The only potential downsides to pausing are we can't guarantee the same coach and class when you resume (especially if it's a longer period of time), and your reader may need to take the placement exam again to make sure we place them in the right level (again, mostly applicable for longer pauses).
In what situations do you offer makeup sessions?
We work hard to make sure classes happen on schedule. That said, we're the first to recognize that we're not perfect and occasionally a class session is interrupted by technological issues or coach absences due to last-minute power outages or other emergencies. We will always offer a makeup session for these situations, usually on the Friday of the same week at the same time of day.
What experience or qualifications do coaches have?
All of our coaches have teaching experience and teaching certificates or other similar credentials.
What kind of course training do coaches go through for Savvy certification?
We provide coaches with the curriculum and content for all coaching sessions. Coaches are trained on Savvy’s values, curriculum and content, safety and session management, rules and procedures, and our online platform.
How is Savvy Reading’s curriculum designed?
Savvy Reading’s curriculum is designed to engage readers in an online format that aligns with Common Core State Standards. These are a set of high-quality, research based standards providing a clear and consistent framework for educators. Our program is also informed by the 5 pillars of literacy instruction identified by the National Reading Panel. These include phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Our lessons include grade-level appropriate instruction in sight words, phonemic awareness, phonics, reading comprehension, and fluency. Repetition and review is built into each lesson to help readers build confidence and mastery.
How do I choose a reading level for my child?
What platform do you use?
Coaching sessions are held via our web-based platform that includes video conferencing, slides and interactive elements.
Does your program cater to readers with dyslexia?
Savvy curriculum incorporates the Orton Gillingham approach and is helpful for all readers, including those with reading struggles like dyslexia. The Orton Gillingham elements can be found in the way Savvy includes review in most lessons, the way phonics instruction is focused and explicit, and the way multisensory elements are included. Many of our coaches have certifications and experience teaching students with dyslexia.
